“Art directors look for “skill level, originality, and the x-factor.” – Randy Briley, veteran game art director and senior lecturer at DigiPen Institute “

The gaming industry offers abundant opportunities for enthusiasts to turn their passion into a fulfilling career. Among these avenues lies the realm of Game Art and Design. In the competitive field of game art and design, a stellar portfolio can be your ticket to landing your dream job. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or just starting out, having a compelling portfolio is essential to showcasing your skills and creativity to potential employers. Here are some tips to help you build a portfolio that stands out!

Showcase Your Skills

Your portfolio is the first thing any prospective employer sees, so make sure to display your best works. Choose pieces that highlight your skills and style. Additionally, focus on showcasing a few outstanding projects and avoid overwhelming your portfolio with mediocre work. Quality is more important than quantity.

Make it Simple and Digital

Your portfolio doesn’t need to be flashy so make sure to keep it simple. Your work will speak for you. Ensure that your portfolio is fully digital. This will allow interviewers to zoom into your work and see it from all angles.

Diversify Your Projects

Game art and design is a multidisciplinary field, so it’s important to showcase a range of skills and expertise in your portfolio. Include projects that show your proficiency in different areas such as character design, environment art, concept art, 3D modeling, texturing, and animation. This will show potential employers that you have a well-rounded skill set and can tackle various aspects of game development.

Tailor Your Portfolio

Every prospective employer has a certain style. If you are looking for a job with a particular employer, then research their style and make sure you include a few works that fit that style. Additionally, if you are applying for a particular job in say character design, you should focus on showcasing your character design and modeling skills. Your portfolio is not static, so make sure you keep it up to date with the relevant trends too.

Include Relevant Details

Make sure your resume and contact details are easily available. Your hard work will go to waste if your prospective employer has no way to contact you. Your portfolio should be easy to navigate, allowing potential employers to quickly find the information they’re looking for.

Keep it Organized

Create separate sections for different types of work, such as character art, environment art, and concept art. Provide clear labels and descriptions for each project, including information about the tools and techniques used. Your employer must go through thousands of profiles, so making it easy to find the details they are looking for is sure to win your brownie points!

Highlight Your Uniqueness

Other than originality, the x-factor or uniqueness that you can contribute with your skills is what sets you apart from the rest. This spark reflects your artistic personality and while it might take time to develop, keep working on more and more projects until you find your personal style.

Stay Current and Relevant

The field of game art and design is constantly evolving, with new tools, techniques, and trends emerging all the time. Stay current with the latest developments in the industry and incorporate them into your portfolio to demonstrate that you’re up-to-date and relevant.

Building a strong portfolio takes time, effort, and dedication, but it’s well worth the investment when it comes to pursuing a career in game art and design. By following the above steps, you can create a portfolio that impresses potential employers and helps you stand out in the competitive world of game development.

“The ability to adapt to changes will determine your success in life.”  – Benjamin Franklin

The gaming industry is renowned for its dynamic nature, demanding a keen ability to adapt—a crucial quality for any project manager. Enter Sampath Kumar, Associate Project Manager at iXie, who possesses this adaptability in spades.

Embarking on his journey as a test lead and ascending to the role of project manager, Sampath’s trajectory unfolds in this exclusive blog. Join us as we delve into his experiences and insights, navigating the ever-evolving landscape of game development.

Games, Games and More Games!

As a child of the 90s era, Sampath’s passion for gaming ignited with classics like Mario, Dave, Road Rash, and NFS—just like many of ours did. His journey evolved as he made the leap to PC and delved into the realm of multiplayer games. Upon entering college, Sampath discovered his gaming clan, bonding with friends over intense sessions of Counterstrike. The thrill escalated as he actively participated in tournaments and college fests, elevating his love for gaming to new heights.

Game Testing, What’s That?

It was a quirk of fate that brought Sampath into the gaming industry, arising from a routine interview for a call center position that unexpectedly unfolded into a unique opportunity. Much like many gamers of his time, Sampath was initially unaware of the existence of a role called a game tester. It was during the interlude while awaiting a call center interview that he first encountered the term “Game Tester.” Intrigued, Sampath swiftly opted to attend the game tester interview instead, requesting a week for preparation. The rest, as they say, is history.

Entry into iXie

Sampath, with four years of experience in the gaming industry and an additional four years as an entrepreneur, made a significant career shift when he joined iXie, the gaming division of Indium Software. Following his entrepreneurial venture, he recognized that this path was not aligning with his professional goals. Seeking opportunities in the industry, Sampath reached out to his network, and it was through one of these connections that he secured a position at iXie.

“I like working at iXie. They are very open about the opportunities which they have here. Even though I re-joined the gaming industry after a 4-year break, they valued my opinion and if we are proactive and make contributions, we get recognized for it.”

Life at iXie

Over the course of five years at iXie, Sampath experienced notable career growth, progressing from a senior game tester to an Associate Project Manager. Throughout this period, he actively contributed to various captivating projects. One of the most challenging yet intriguing assignments was when he initially joined iXie and was assigned to the Center of Excellence (CoE) team. Tasked with testing a demanding PC game, Sampath described the project as exceptionally challenging, with the team working tirelessly, even overnight, to meet tight deadlines.

Reflecting on the experience, Sampath acknowledged the project’s difficulty but also emphasized the enjoyable moments, highlighting the camaraderie among the team, making the challenging endeavor a memorable and rewarding one.

The Future Path

When queried about his future aspirations, Sampath, drawing from his entrepreneurial background, expressed a keen interest in transitioning into game production—an area that captivates his attention. He concluded by emphasizing the promising prospects of the gaming industry, highlighting the abundant opportunities available for individuals looking to venture into this dynamic field.

“Technology has played a vital role in bringing gaming to where it is today, and I am sure that it will continue to do so. So, there are a lot of opportunities for gamers who are interested in joining this industry.”

“Gaming is not a destination; it’s a journey driven by passion.”

This quote proves itself very true in the case of Saravanan R, Senior Test Lead at iXie. Their unwavering passion for gaming led them to iXie, and it continues to propel them forward in the fiercely competitive gaming industry. Join us as we embark on a journey through Saravanan’s remarkable career in the gaming industry.

Saravanan’s gaming odyssey began in his childhood, just like many gamers, as he immersed himself in brick games and console titles. However, what sets him apart from others is his unwavering commitment to a gaming career right from the onset. In his own words “My passion for games led me to pursue my first job as a video game tester. I instantly fell in love with it and knew it was the right career for me.

Entry into iXie

Saravanan came to iXie with nearly 3 years of experience in game testing prior to which he has worked in a variety of companies. In his prior roles at other companies, his primary focus was on testing console games. However, since joining iXie, he has had the chance to broaden his experience by testing games on various platforms, including PC, mobile, consoles, and more. He’s also had the opportunity to engage in web testing. He states that iXie has been instrumental in expanding his skill set and advancing his career.

Life at iXie

On joining iXie one of the first projects he was involved with was a Crane Simulation Game. “It was a fascinating project. We were tasked with testing the simulation created by a game development company boasting a 3000-strong workforce. This company utilized the simulation for employee training, and our role was to ensure its functionality met their standards.”

One being asked if there were any tools or techniques, he used to complete the project this is what he had to say “In our testing process, we don’t rely on specific tools, as the choice often depends on the device we’re testing. However, our mindset and approach during the testing phase are key techniques. Our way of thinking while testing games plays a pivotal role in our work.

His advice to game testers tasked with continuous 8-hour gameplay sessions, is to break down the tasks into smaller, manageable segments and take regular breaks. This approach will make the workload more manageable and keep them focused.

Future Plans

Going forward Saravanan plans to learn a whole lot more about testing, gaming and much more to better advance his career. He has a genuine passion for VR technology despite its challenging nature. He finds it an incredibly intriguing field as it offers the chance to explore entirely new and diverse virtual worlds.

His parting words to aspiring game testers who aim to join this competitive industry are as follows “My advice would be to find a company like iXie that offers excellent growth opportunities and a clear path to advancement. iXie’s Game Training Academy provides free training for anyone interested, making it the ideal destination for aspiring gamers pursuing a career in the gaming industry.

He hopes that future game testers will make use of the opportunities around them as getting the job or not getting the job all depends on being at the right place, at the right time, with the right skills.

Never stop learning for when we stop learning we stop growing and this motto has stood Sankar Pandiyaraj, Test Lead at iXie, in good stead throughout the course of his life. Like all gamers, Sankar’s love for gaming started at an early age with Mario, Super Mario and City Racer. His love for gaming was so high that when he found out that Indium, iXie’s parent company had a gaming division he jumped at the opportunity to turn his love for gaming into a career. Going forward we will be taking a deep dive into the life of a test lead through the eyes of Sankar Pandiyaraj.

Joining iXie

Sankar has worked in iXie for a decade but the events that brought him here were a total accident. Sankar initially joined Indium through the recommendation of a friend who worked here. It was only after he joined that he learned about the existence of Indium’s gaming division, iXie.

Being an avid gamer, there was no way that Sankar could ignore this opportunity and despite his somewhat shy demeanor, he did just that. His decade at iXie is a testament to his passion and dedication to his work. On being asked how he wants to be remembered when he retires or leaves iXie he gave the following reply “When I do leave iXie, I want to be remembered as fun person to be with.”

Life at iXie

After joining iXie Sankar’s first project involved testing a multiplayer game. Having previously never played AR games, Sankar found it an interesting project and looked forward to testing more games within the genre. “I have worked at other places before iXie, but none of them made me want to stay for long until now. It goes to show just how powerful following your passion can be. I can’t even imagine what I would be doing other than gaming”

When asked what he likes about iXie, Sankar answered that one was the chance to play games and the other was the ability to adjust work-life balance based on his needs. “I like the fact that there is a clear distinction between work and personal life. When I joined iXie I was a bachelor and now I am the father of two daughters. I have experienced and celebrated all of my life’s joys and sorrows here at iXie.”

But while Sankar finds his work enjoyable there are some lowlights as well. While most people believe that game testing or game QA involves just playing a video game and finding bugs, they are not aware of the more tedious aspects of the job. In Sankar’s own words “There are many boring moments. At times we will need to test the same level of the game again and again in order to ensure that it works exactly as designed. Most aspiring game testers are not really aware of this aspect of the job until they start their career.”

Future Aspirations

Currently Sankar is focused on upskilling himself. His interests lie in learning more about current upcoming technologies such as Cloud and Automation. His definition of success is that it is something to be enjoyed. “If you are at a point where you can do what you want, whether it is travel, work or anything else without worrying about not having enough time or money that is when you are truly successful.”

His advice to future aspiring gamers is to enjoy what they do. If they enjoy gaming, then game testing is a good career opportunity for them.

Everyone has something they love to do. A passion, a hobby which we pursue in spite of opposition. It can be found at different times, or we might never find it no matter how long we search. In Naveen’s case he found it when he was just a kid, playing on his game boy and consoles.

He looked at the screen and knew that this was what he loved to do. While he had no idea where his passion for gaming would take him, the seeds of his passion first sprouted during his early childhood.

If we were to describe Naveen in a few words, it would be dedicated, hardworking, somewhat short-tempered and a big Anime lover. His favorite animes are Naruto, One Piece and Death Note.

How it started

While Naveen’s love for gaming started in childhood, it was further developed during his college years when he came across a gaming course which led to him entering the gaming industry. His initial interest was in game art production, and he learned the basis of creating game art in this course.

But while he loved this aspect of the gaming industry it was not enough to keep his interest. In his own words “While game art development was interesting to learn, there were certain limitations on what you can contribute. You will be given a concept and you will draw it out and push it out into the pipeline and that will be it. But as a game tester, you can play different genres of games and give your input which can be used to improve the overall specs of the game. I felt it was important for me to see the games from the user’s perspective and I could do that as a game tester.”

This eventually led him to iXie.

From Game Art to Game QA

His first introduction to iXie was through the IGTA (The iXie Game Training Academy), where he learned everything he needed to know about the gaming industry and about his role as a game tester. After completing his training at IGTA, he joined iXie as a Test Associate in September 2018. Naveen will be completing 5 years with iXie this September.

On being asked how his time at iXie has helped him scale up this is what he has to say “At iXie, we can learn a lot about all aspects of gaming, not just the technical aspects. The learning at iXie is great.”

His 5 years of learning and growth at iXie have been a great help to him in his career. From a Test Associate he is now a senior test engineer who is currently working on a pretty cool VR game project. This is a very exciting project for Naveen, as VR is a relatively new field, and he looks forward to bringing this project to fruition.

Future Goals

Going forward, Naveen wishes to make use of the knowledge and skills he has in game art production and involve himself in game development in order to expand his scope further.

His advice to gamers who wish to enter the gaming industry is “You should not expect to be immediately given a high-end game to test when you have just entered the industry. So, keep your expectations to a minimum. Once you are familiar with your job role, you can get exposure to other genres and improve yourself. Game testing is not like other 9-5 jobs with fixed hours where you can come, work and then leave. While the timings are flexible you should also constantly keep improving yourself to advance further in this field.”

All Gamers dream of a world where they can just play their favorite game, all day every day, but very few get the chance to make those dreams a reality. Gururaj is one of the few who was fortunate enough to make his passion into his profession. Like all gamers, Gururaj’s passion for gaming started at an early age, when he played old traditional board games with his friends.

When asked what fueled his passion for gaming, Gururaj highlighted an incident from his childhood when he used to play video games at his friend’s house.

Watching the way my friends played games, overcoming all the obstacles to win fascinated me. I considered it an achievement to overcome all the challenges that the games threw at me to reach the goal. That truly fueled my passion for gaming.

Entry into the Gaming Industry

While Gururaj’s competitiveness fueled his passion for gaming, his entry into the gaming industry started a bit later when he was a bit older, and a computer training institute had opened near his home.

His father wished for both him and his sister to upskill themselves by enrolling in one of the computer courses. While exploring the courses on offer, Gururaj stumbled upon a gaming course which gave him the opportunity to encounter a variety of games from Dave to Mario and much more. This course went a long way in kickstarting his interest in the Gaming Industry.

But what brought him to iXie?

In his own words, “I have always wanted to work in the Gaming Industry, but in those days, everyone believed Gaming was not a profitable career. I didn’t even know that it was a career option until a colleague from one of my previous companies informed me that there was a game testing company in Bengaluru that was recruiting game testers.

Journey into Game Testing with iXie

Gururaj has been with iXie since January 2018 for a total of 5.5 years, the longest he has stayed with any one company. During his career with iXie he has progressed from the role of a test lead to Senior Test lead highlighting his dedication and hard work.

Gururaj’s dedication to his work can be seen from his first project onwards. Despite being new to the company and culture, he was able to quicky adapt and build a rapport with the clients. Even now, four years after the conclusion of that project, he still maintains a friendly relationship with them and connects with them regularly on social media platforms.

When asked what he wished to say to others who wished to embark on the path of game testing, this is what he had to say “Don’t listen to others who say that gaming is not a stable career path. According to me, it is much more stable than many other roles in the IT (Information Technology) industry. So, jump on the board if gaming is your true passion, we are here for you.

Beyond Game QA – Future Plans

With iXie expanding its range of services beyond just Game QA, there are a lot of opportunities for Gururaj as well as others to pursue other avenues of gaming beyond Game QA. Gururaj himself hopes to expand more into management and game design going forward.

As a parting thought, on being asked to share a life lesson gaming has taught him, he shared this piece of advice “No matter what life throws at you, no matter how many times you may fail, you should always get back on your feet and try to beat the odds until you win.

He stated that this was what gaming had taught him and clearly, this lesson has stood him in good stead throughout his time at iXie.
